Established in 1986 with a modest beginning through a specialized Bachelor's program, the Department of Mass Communication at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has grown into one of the leading institutions for media education in Pakistan. Over the years, the department has played a pivotal role in promoting and strengthening the field of mass communication in Pakistan.

The Department offers a wide range of academic programs, including Bachelor's, MPhil, and PhD degrees. It receives a large number of admission applications each year, selecting candidates purely on a merit basis.

Over the past three decades, the Department has produced a significant number of media professionals who are now serving in prominent roles within national and international media organizations. The Department has also played a key role in the academic development of media education nationwide. A considerable number of faculty members in public and private universities across Pakistan hold MPhil or PhD degrees from AIOU’s Department of Mass Communication.

Demonstrating remarkable growth over the years, the Department has made significant contributions to both academic instruction and professional training for the journalist community in Pakistan. In line with the directives of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, it recently launched a four-year BS program to meet evolving educational standards. In response to the evolving demands of the job market and the media industry, the Department is planning to introduce a range of certificate, diploma, and degree programs in the near future.

The Department boasts a team of highly qualified faculty members with extensive teaching and research experience. Its contributions have been recognized at numerous national and international forums in the fields of journalism, mass communication, and media studies.

Introduction

The Department of Mass Communication was established in 1986 within the Faculty of Social Sciences catering for the educational needs of students at various levels ranging from professionally focused bachelors programme to research-based social science focused studies in MPhil Mass Communication. The world class curricula has been adopted for the Masters and MPhil level programs. The department has produced a number of course books, study guides etc. Thousands of students are being benefitted by the bachelors and masters level programs of the department. The department has a highly educated and foreign qualified faculty.

Objectives

The basic objective of the Department is to strengthen media education and research in Pakistan for the working and budding journalists/media researchers/analysts and teachers. To meet this end, the Department provides opportunities of higher studies of research at PhD, MPhil and Masters levels. Besides, the Department provides skill orientation programs at graduate and certification levels to persons taking up mass communication as career.

The Department is equipped with a media lab, FM radio and production studios for audio and video programming.

The Department is planning to launch short courses in video production, audio and video editing, graphics and journalist training programs.

The Allama Iqbal Open University was established in May, 1974, with the main objectives of providing educational opportunities to masses and to those who cannot leave their homes and jobs. During all these past years, the University has more than fulfilled this promise.
