
The Department of Arabic Language & Literature is one of the pioneering departments at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), established in 1974.
Introduction
Since its inception, the department has played a pivotal role in promoting Arabic education in Pakistan. It was among the first in the country to introduce radio and television programs for teaching Arabic, launching its renowned broadcast العربی سھل in 1975. This program, along with other broadcast and non-broadcast initiatives, remained instrumental in Arabic language education until 2000.
Over the years, the department has significantly expanded its academic offerings. Currently, it provides a diverse range of programs, including:
- PhD in Arabic (Regular program, launched in 2022) (Online classes)
- MPhil in Arabic (Established in 2012 to promote scholarly research) (Online classes)
- MA Arabic (With a focus on language, literature, social thought, and religious studies)
- BS in Arabic (2-year, 2.5-year, and 4-year programs introduced in 2019) (Online classes)
- Short Courses (On Campus) Arabic Journalism: language & Terms, let’s Learn Arabic, Understanding of Quranic Arabic
- Other Short Courses, including Lughat-ul-Quran, Arabi Bol Chal, Al-Lisan Al-Arabi, and ATTC
- Arabic courses at Matric, Intermediate, and bachelor’s levels
AIOU has also been a pioneer in Arabic teacher training, launching Pakistan’s first Arabic Teachers Training Program (ATTC) in 1982.
Additionally, the Journal of Arabic Research (JAR), recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the "Y" category, stands as a testament to the department's commitment to academic excellence and research.

- Signed MoU with Al-Azhar University, Egypt, strengthening academic collaboration and research exchange.
