Introduction

Department of English has been working earnestly since long to offer prestigious PhD programme which may not only cater to the needs of professionals working in the field of ELT but can also offer a platform for future planners in the field of different branches of linguistics, and related interdisciplinary areas. The Department offered PhD in English (Linguistics) in Autumn 2020 for the first time in the history of the department. Now the department is offering this apex programme second time for the semester Autumn 2021, based on annual offering, with the following details.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A graduate holding MS/MPhil in the relevant field or equivalent with CGPA 3.00/1st Division is eligible to apply for admission in PhD Programme.
  • GRE/GAT Subject or equivalent with 60% passing marks. In case of non-availability of GRE / GAT, departmental test may be conducted as per HEC/AIOU rules followed by interview.
  • Publication of research article(s) in HEC recognized journals will be preferred.
  • The minimum duration of the PhD degree is six semesters (three years) and maximum duration shall be 16 semesters (eight years) as per HEC/AIOU rules.

Selection Process

  1. Interested candidates can apply for admission on prescribed form to the Chairman, Department of English.
  2. Admission will be given strictly on merit and on approved criteria (as per HEC/AIOU rules).
  3. In-service candidates shall be required to submit their departmental No Objection Certificate (NOC) along with their admission application.
  4. Admission of PhD will be notified by the Director Admissions after the submission of receipt of admission dues.

Duration

Two to four years (as per AIOU/HEC rules).

Medium of Instruction

Face-to-face on regular basis. Participation in classes is mandatory.

Teaching Methodology

The PhD programme is offered on regular basis and the instructional methodology shall be followed solely on face-to-face basis. Some other significant details are mentioned below:

Workshop

There will be a series of mandatory workshops during the course work to provide an opportunity to the students to share their understanding of course content with fellow students. Similarly, special seminars and workshops will be arranged during the third and/or fourth semester that require students and research scholars to develop and present their draft of research proposals.

Thesis

A PhD Scholar is required to conduct research work under the supervision of an advisor having PhD degree in the relevant field(as per relevant HEC/AIOU rules).

Viva

The scholars will be required to present and defend their research proposals in front of the PhD Examination Committee. Similarly, after the required evaluation of the thesis/dissertation by foreign and local experts (as per HEC/ AIOU rules) a scholar must appear before the committee/public for a public defense to defend his/her research work.
