Introduction

Pakistan is among countries far from achieving EFA and MDGs especially literacy target. There are millions of illiterate populations in Pakistan along with 23 million out of school children. Several initiatives in literacy have been launched by the Government of Pakistan and development sector organizations and they have their own training programs to train the teachers to depart NFE. However, there was a nonavailability of any certified training course when it comes to NFE teacher education. Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is the premier University to provide part-time educational facilities through correspondence courses, tutorials, seminars, workshops, laboratories, television, radio broadcasts and other mass communication media. University having a Distance, NonFormal and Continuing Education Department. Keeping in view the above situation the University took this important initiative to develop certified training courses for Non-Formal Education teachers. In 2018 with the collaboration of UNESCO Pakistan, DNF&CE department of AIOU has developed and launched the teacher training certificate program in Literacy and Non-formal education. The field of non-formal education is rapidly evolving, and its impact on individuals and communities is becoming increasingly recognized. Educational leaders play a critical role in shaping the direction and success of non-formal education programs, whether they are focused on literacy, personal development, or career advancement. As the demand for non-formal education programs grows, so does the need for skilled and visionary leaders, competent teachers and expert facilitators who can navigate complex challenges, adapt to changing environments, and promote innovation and creativity. They must possess a deep understanding of the unique needs and characteristics of nonformal education, as well as the ability to develop effective strategies, mobilize resources, and build partnerships to achieve their goals. This requires a combination of academic knowledge, practical experience, and strong leadership skills, including communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Educational leaders must also be committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and work to ensure that non-formal education programs are accessible and effective for all learners.
